I'm Jordy Houglum, the mind behind Puka Maui. My journey began in 2020, right in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown. Seeking an escape from the indoor monotony, I turned to sewing, unknowingly stumbling upon a newfound passion. What started as a pastime quickly blossomed into a love affair.
The pivotal moment came when I decided to transform my sewing hobby into a high school senior project at Maui Preparatory Academy, creating the concept of Puka Maui. Living in Maui, Hawaii I was always on the lookout for the perfect beach bag to house my essentials, from accessories to sunscreen and makeup. One day, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create my own beach bags. To my delight, they resonated with others and were a resounding success!
Supporting local businesses has a special place in my heart. By championing small businesses and contributing to the local community, we take a step towards a more environmentally conscious and sustainable future.
The majority of Puka Maui's fabric prints are personally designed by me and then printed in North Carolina. However, my love for shopping for fabrics from other designers still remains strong, resulting in a delightful blend of both my own creations and those of fellow artists.
Puka Maui, the beloved handmade bag business, extends its vibrant island charm to the Sunshine State with regular pop-up market appearances across Florida. At the heart of this bustling venture is the passionate owner, Jordy Houglum, who dedicates her entire week to the meticulous art of sewing. With unwavering dedication and creativity, she crafts these unique beach bags that embody the spirit of Maui. However, Jordy's commitment doesn't stop there. Every weekend, you can find her at various markets, showcasing her exquisite creations and selling her beach bags to eager customers. Despite the hustle and bustle of market life, she effortlessly balances these in-person sales with the continuous flow of orders through her website, ensuring that Puka Maui's delightful beach bags find their way into the hands of beach lovers near and far.
